books & movies

I am such a slacker blogger lately. I have been busy with other things... namely the HUGE Easter Swap I am hosting. Now, I am all caught up with the business end (details on 12 Days blog) so I can focus on the creative stuff like figuring out what I am going to make.

Anyway, that is for another post. Today I wanted to touch on a New Year's goal I made last year which was to "read at least one book for pleasure each month." Well, I far surpassed that goal and while I was pretty lame about actually recording what I read in my journal ( think I recorded 2.. lol) I read A LOT which was something I had fallen out of the habit of doing since the little came along. I am glad that I was able to meet that goal because I love reading so much and there are so many good books out there.

I just finished reading "The Namesake." I have always been fascinated by Indian culture and have discovered myself reading a lot of books set in India and enjoying them immensely. This is a bit different in that it explores what happens when that culture comes to the US. It was very interesting and I enjoyed it very much. If you are at all interested in these types of books, be sure to also check out A Fine Balance and The Twentieth Wife ( LOVED!!)

Ok, so now I may be a bit late on the band wagon for this book. Its Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. It has been recommended by many so I finally picked it up. I have just started reading it and am only about 6 or 7 chapters in and I already LOVE IT! I stayed up til 1:30 am reading last night, er this morning. I will have to keep you all updated as to if I continue to like it. I am sure I will, I love the writing style and her story is really resonating with me and where I am as of late.

Ok, finally. I had only intended to write about the books but I recently got to have a "Hens Day" with my SIL and a couple of girlfriends and we went and saw Juno. I have not seen such a good movie in a long time. It was quirky and funny and touching. I guess it kind of comes off as a chick flick but I think a lot of guys would find it enjoyable too. Definitely worth the $8 to go see it in the theatre.. check it out!

  1. Eat Pray Love is fantastic! I loved it! And I have the film "The Namesake" (haven't read the book) at home, but haven't watched it yet - thanks for the recommendation, I know what I'll do tonight! :)

  4. We just saw the movie made of Namesake which is also very good. Of course does not go into the detail that the book does, but it's very good.

Loved Juno too! That dialog...just keeps you on your toes.

  5. I love reading and I think I need to make a resolution like you did. I would love to say that I read one book a month. I know it can be done, just putting my mind to it is the hard part. I must let go of other things to fulfill my passion for reading. Thanks for inspiring me today.

  6. I loved Juno!!!!!!!!!

I also think A Fine Balance is the best book I ever read!!

I added The Twentieth Wife to my list of books to read.

Did I already tell you about Sister of My Heart by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni??? Another great "India" book. It has a sequel too. She is a great writer.

Now, don't forget to keep track of all the books you read this year!!! Keep a running list in a date book or on your calender. I want to see a Top 10 list next year!

and also Eat Pray Love...the best book I have read in ages. I actually read it when it first came out and hardly anyone else had heard about it. I'm so glad now that EVERYONE is reading it and now I want to re-read it !!! Plus if you get a chance to see Elizabeth Gilbert on a re-run of Oprah, watch it...she is great !
